Alexander Winch is an artist and textile engineer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Working across painting, Jacquard weaving, and pattern design, he creates images and objects shaped by landscape, modernist abstraction, natural history, and traditions of decorative art. His work often explores the space between figure and ornament, abstraction and representation, using pattern, flattened space, fields of color and intricately interwoven layers to create richly material works.

Winch studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and Textile Design at Thomas Jefferson University. His background in both disciplines informs a practice in which painting, weaving, and design are closely connected. Alongside independent bodies of work, he has produced commissioned textiles, collaborative fashion projects, and woven works developed from original drawings and paintings.

Originally from Baltimore, MD with roots in Greece and Canada, Winch now lives and works in the East Bay.
